In my first job out of college, I worked as a marketing coordinator for a small networking organization in Chicago. Even with little real world experience, it was obvious that the management style at this office was distinctly odd. Eventually, though, the daily antics seemed to loose their rattle. And, when my boss declared that everyone must wear slippers and mandated that trans-fats be banned from our diets, I was okay with it. I rather like slippers, and everyone knows trans-fats are bad for you.
My parents urged me to stick it out for two years, and I did. I survived with all limbs in tact, some killer stories, and a greater sense of self.In hindsight, I wish I would have blogged about my experience (with pseudo names to protect the innocent, of course), because already, my cherished stories are getting a bit fuzzy. Hearing new stories about my old bosses is still one of my favorite things, and I think my friends and family get a kick out of my office stories in a similar way. Details are what make a story memorable, an apartment clever, a dinner perfect. Just ask Martha Stewart. Details are everything.
While I have since sworn off unstable work environments, I am excited to use The Addison Stop as a platform for sharing interesting happenings in art and design from my little corner of the world. And, this time I’ll be sure to include the details.
